2021 Luminous Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir

Our primary bottling from Luminous Hills Vineyard, the “Silver” label, is always a selection of barrels from across the vineyard: both volcanic and sedimentary soils, varying elevations, the many aspects from southwest to southeast, and the varied clones – essentially, the “big picture” of the vineyard, built for balance and aging, but also for broader accessibility. The differences between the distinct expressions from the diverse parts of the vineyard are particularly apparent in this exceptional vintage, highlighted by deep flavors, fine tannins, balancing acidity and an overall air of elegance. The high elevation of the vineyard helped moderate the late June temperature spike, low yields provided concentration, and the early harvest finesse. The result from the careful selection of barrels and unique qualities of the vintage is a wine with impeccable balance and range, fruit and spice, power, depth and grace. 99 cases produced.

2021 Luminous Hills Estate Grown ASTRA

The Astra is a super small production wine in this exceptional 2021 vintage, taken from half of four different barrels all drawn from the southeastern and mostly higher elevation part of the vineyard: two of the spicy 667 clone planted on the red-fruit driven Jory volcanic soils, complemented by twp halves of barrels of the complementary 115 clone planted on sedimentary soil, adding dark tone underpinnings and depth. The choice to use half of four different than simply two whole barrels allows for many distinct layers and a more appropriate balance of 25% new oak. The microclimate and clones in the parts of the vineyard that make up this wine suit it best, producing finesse and elegance supported by a frame of richness and texture. 48 cases produced.

2021 Luminous Hills Very Special Reserve

The Very Special Reserve is a blend that, like the Astra, is one of our smallest production wines, but also made only in exceptional vintages and in ones where we have enough top tier barrels to build our top level reserve wine without taking away from the quality and character of our other wines. 2021 was just such a vintage. As in the past, it is built on qualities of finesse, nuance, elegance and the ethereal qualities we love about Pinot Noir. This unique and superbly balanced assemblage, like the Astra, is drawn from half of four barrels, with a dominant proportion of 115 the sedimentary souls at the base of the vineyard, providing the structure, richness and depth, coupled with a supporting role from the 777 in the higher elevation volcanic soils in the southwest, contributing the balancing focused red fruit and floral notes. 49 cases produced.
